Two different companies, two different philosophies. Tough Mudder is teamwork over a clock. Spartan times you and makes you pay in burpees for what you can't finish. Here's what to actually expect from both.
Tough Mudder is built around teamwork, not a personal clock. Most obstacles are designed to require helping the person next to you over a wall or through mud, it's genuinely more community than competition.
Yes, the obstacle with live wires is exactly what it sounds like. It's optional to skip, most people don't, know what you're signing up for.
Ice-water obstacles like Arctic Enema are a shock to the system even in warm weather. Bring a full dry change of clothes for after, this isn't optional comfort, it's necessary.
Trail shoes with real grip, clothes you don't mind ruining, and no cotton, it holds water and weight the entire course. Leave the jewelry and watch you care about at home or in gear check.
Spartan is a different animal from Tough Mudder, it's a race against the clock with a points system, not a team scramble through mud.
Sprint is a 5K (about 3.1 miles) with 20 obstacles. Super is roughly double that at 6.2 miles with 25 obstacles. Beast is 21K, a little over 13 miles, with 30 obstacles. There's also Ultra for the true gluttons for punishment.
Miss a pass/fail obstacle and it's 30 burpees on the spot for standard OCR events. Decide before race day whether you're the type to grind through a rig or bank the burpees and move on.
Unlike Tough Mudder, Spartan runs on a clock and has age-group and elite competitive categories if you want to chase a podium finish, not just a finisher medal.
Spartan added a Doubles format where you and a partner tackle the course and tag-team obstacles together, worth knowing if you'd rather race with someone than solo.
Obstacle lists, distances, and burpee penalty rules pulled from Spartan's own race type guide, confirm current-year specifics on spartan.com before you register.
Gear check bags get muddy too, pack a garbage bag inside your bag for your dry clothes so they survive the day. Bring cash or a card for post-race food and the beer garden, most venues aren't fully cashless. Spectators can usually walk to several obstacles to cheer, check the venue map when you arrive, it varies site to site. Racing Spartan specifically: know your burpee math going in, 30 burpees per skipped obstacle adds up fast if your grip strength isn't there yet, train the rig work, not just the miles.

Not a mud run, not a HYROX box, its own animal: a handful of timed and measured events testing raw strength, speed, and power, no obstacles to climb over, no sled to drag.
Nine functional events, 40-yard dash, broad jump, vertical jump, bench press, agility drill, trap bar deadlift, power ball toss, pull-ups, and a 300m shuttle, scored by age group with individual and doubles divisions. Held at Sports Academy at the Star in Frisco, TX. Must be 21+ to compete. Annual, most recently late September.
