Race Weekend Is A Trip. Plan It Like One.

Where to stay and how to string it all together if you're chasing more than one race on the trip. Jump to Places To Stay or Plan Your Race.

Places To Stay

The Best Hotel Isn't The Closest Hotel.

Distance means nothing if the walls are thin and the elevator line is twenty minutes deep on race morning. Here's what actually matters.

How Far To The Start Line?

Not "how many miles," how many minutes on foot at 5am with a full corral already blocking the sidewalk. A hotel ten minutes away by car can be forty minutes away on race morning.

Did You Actually Sleep?

Host hotels are convenient and loud. Wedding down the hall, bachelorette party in the elevator, a lobby full of nervous energy until midnight. We ask reviewers to rate this specifically, because it matters more than thread count.

How Far From The Airport?

Especially for destination races. A hotel that's perfect for the race can be brutal for a 6am flight out the next morning with a medal, a bag of gear, and legs that don't want to move.

Breakfast Before The Gun?

If the hotel breakfast opens at 7am and your corral closes at 6:45, that's not breakfast, that's a rumor. We flag which spots actually feed you before a 5k, let alone a marathon.

Book The Second You Register, Not The Week Before. The best hotel isn't always the closest one, but it does need to be booked early. The minute a race opens registration, check the official race website for a host hotel block, most big races negotiate a discounted rate at hotels near the start or finish, but those blocks are small and they sell out fast, sometimes within days. Set a reminder to check back the week registration opens and again once the race gets closer, room blocks refill and drop as other runners cancel. Wait too long and you're not choosing between hotels anymore, you're choosing between whatever's left and paying full rate for it.
What To Pack

The Essentials Checklist

What runners actually pack, race after race, pulled together from real race-day checklists so you don't find out the hard way at 4:45am in a hotel bathroom. Check items off as you pack, or print the whole list.

The Hydration Timeline

Packing is the easy part. The thing that quietly wrecks more race weekends than any missing item is arriving at the start line already behind on fluid, because a travel day does not feel like a hard effort and nobody plans for it. Here is the timeline we actually run.

Travel Day

This is the day people lose. Airport, plane, rental car, expo, dinner, and you look up at 9pm having had one coffee and half a bottle of water. Fill a bottle after security and finish it before you land. If you are driving, put the bottle where you have to reach past it.

This is also where a HydraPatch earns its place for us. It is a wearable patch you apply once, so it is one less thing to remember on the day you are least likely to remember anything. It is not a substitute for drinking and we would not tell you it was. Code THERACESCOOP takes 25% off.

The Night Before

Stop chugging. Drinking a litre at 10pm buys you a 2am bathroom trip and worse sleep, and sleep is the thing you actually came for. Sip normally through the evening instead, and have your morning water sitting out with your bib and shoes so you are not hunting for it at 4:45am.

If the hotel gives you two small bottles, that is not enough for two people. Buy real water at the expo or a corner store on the way back.

Race Morning

Drink what you normally drink before a long run. Race morning is the worst possible day to try a new routine, a new bottle, a new drink mix or a new anything. Whatever you carry, carry the version you have already trained with.

Know where the aid stations are before the gun, not at mile 9. Most races publish the course map with fluid stops marked, and it is worth two minutes the night before.

After

The half nobody does. You stop, the effort ends, and your body stops asking loudly, but you are still losing fluid for hours. Keep something in your hand on the walk back, and put a bottle in the post-race bag so it is waiting for you rather than something you have to go find.

Longer version, including the guideline on how much to replace, is on our Gear & Training page.
