Boston Marathon

The only World Major you have to earn a spot in first. Here's the scoop, not the qualifying-time spreadsheet you already have memorized.

Logistics

Point-To-Point Means Planning Ahead.

The Date

Always Patriots' Day, the third Monday in April. The 2027 race is set for Monday, April 19, 2027.

Qualifying

The only World Major with a required qualifying time. The qualifying window opens well over a year out, and registration for qualifiers happens in a tight, specific window each fall, mark the date the moment it's announced or you can miss your own qualifying window entirely.

Getting To The Start

Hopkinton is not walkable from downtown Boston. Most runners take official buses from Boston Common early morning, this is a real logistics commitment, plan your morning around a long wait in Athletes' Village before the gun.

Point-To-Point Family Logistics

Because the course is point-to-point, not a loop, your people can't just wait at one spot. The T (Boston's subway) roughly parallels the course, plan specific stations in advance for your family to hop between mile markers.

On Course

Hopkinton To Boylston Street.

Net Downhill, Deceptively Hard

The course drops in elevation overall, but it's not an easy downhill cruise, rolling hills early can wreck your quads before Newton even starts.

Wellesley Scream Tunnel

Around the halfway point, Wellesley College students create a wall of sound you can hear before you see it. A genuine highlight, save some energy to enjoy it.

Newton Hills & Heartbreak Hill

Miles 16 through 21, this is where the race is actually won or lost. Heartbreak Hill isn't the steepest hill you'll ever run, it's brutal specifically because of where it sits in the race.

Boylston Street Finish

One of the most iconic finish lines in the sport. The right turn onto Boylston is a moment, even if your legs have nothing left to give it.

Organization

The B.A.A. Runs A Tight Ship.

Run by the Boston Athletic Association, communication and course organization are consistently rated among the best of any Major. Qualifying-only entry keeps the field fast and the vibe competitive.

Cost & Value

Was It Worth It?

You can't just buy your way in with money, you have to earn it with a qualifying time (or run for a charity bib). That exclusivity is exactly what makes finishing it worth the year of training that got you there. Full details on qualifying standards live on the official B.A.A. site โ†’.

Vibe & Culture

New England Takes Patriots' Day Seriously.

This isn't just a race day in Boston, it's a state holiday. Towns along the route treat it like a hometown parade, and finishing on Boylston Street on Marathon Monday is a genuinely different kind of finish-line energy than any other Major.
